Manhattanhenge

These pictures show the sun setting perfectly between the colossal buildings of New York City. Known as Manhattanhenge (a term coined by an astrophysicist and inspired by Stonehenge) the phenomenon, where the sun is perfectly aligned with the city's east-west grid, only happens twice a year. If you didn't see it on Wednesday (neither did I, so don't feel too bad) you can catch it again in July.

Canine Encounters in Greenport

Our family likes our little dog, Mr. Higgins - we like him alot. But I must tell you that it has never, ever crossed my mind to buy him a little blue stroller with matching knickerbockers, vest, and bow tie! I mean, he's a DOG - with a really nice leash and collar. Yet, in the quaint little seaside village of Greenport, we came across a woman strolling two tiny white dogs (clad in skirts, shoes, and hats) in a pretty pink stroller. The woman loved the attention they brought and allowed Madison to hold one. Okay, I'll admit it, they were definitely cute.

Here's pampered pooch number one going into the stroller...

Pampered pooch number two is ready to roll...

Madison says "hello."

Madison says "goodbye."

At the North Shore, Long Island

We went to Southold on Memorial Day and found a perfect parking spot at Horton's Lighthouse. One hundred and thirty steps carried us down the steep cliffs to the rocky beach below. I think this is a lovely picture of my "little girl" sitting at the seaside...

All of us in Central Park

Randy and me in Central Park. I will not soon forget the wonderful time our family had on the day we were together there.

Neal, Dan, Randy, and Abbey stopping for a quick photo on what is known as "The Mall" in Central Park. It's a w-i-d-e lane, lined with beautiful trees, park benches, and all sorts of interesting people.

Me and my "boys." I think they'll always be my boys, even though they're twenty-five and soon-to-be twenty-seven.

Abbey and me near the pond where the mallards fear not to get near.

I just love this shot of Dan and his Dad.

Entertainment - SUBWAY STYLE!

Sorry no blog yesterday - I was out of commission and unable to work the keyboard. Our time in NYC was wonderful! We met up with Neal and Dan in mid-town Manhattan and took a taxi to Central Park. We went to the zoo and spent a lot of time walking, talking, and enjoying all the creatures on display. Finding ourselves hungry, we went to this fantastic restaurant called Dallas BBQ, but we had to take the subway to get there. Here's what we experienced while riding those underground roller coasters:

Daniel (who has very, very good Spanish abilities) translated this song for us. It's about some girl with beautiful black eyes. Isn't New York amazing? I mean, where else do things like this happen? Love it!

New York, NY

Good morning! Today Randy and Abbey and I are taking the train into the city. We'll spend most of our time in Central Park where they have boat rentals, a zoo, places to eat, etc. I'll post pictures when we get back!

For now, here's an aerial view of where we'll be spending our afternoon:

Time for flowers

Abbey and I went to the Bloomin' Haus in Holtsville today. I bought a flat of bedding flowers and a hanging basket of miniature, red petunias for the front porch. We even got sunflowers! We decided to "hide" the electric pole in our front yard by encircling it with sunflowers. When they start to get tall, we'll tie them to the pole with twine. You should go to the Bloomin' Haus - it's right on the way to church and has everything you could imagine; and the prices are very reasonable. There's even a petting zoo there for the kids - and for anyone else who enjoys a stroll through the zoo...

This is a VERY small section of the nursery, but gives you an idea of the fantastic flowers you can find.

Here's Abbey taking our flowers to the car. I think our girl is so lovely!

Again...

And yes, we did go to the petting zoo. If you have little kids you just have to take them to see this tiny, baby donkey who was born on May 7th. He is absolutely adorable!

At heart, I really think I could be a farm girl...

Exercise!

Randy and I hopped on our bikes after dinner last night and cruised around the neighborhood for about an hour. Both of us enjoy bike riding and make it a regular thing every summer.

This shot was not easy! My right arm was sticking way out as I tried to get both of us in the picture while we were moving! I wonder what the neighbors thought?

A lot nicer than yesterday's depiction of the island! Long Island is so unique in that it's incredibly overpopulated yet still has so much natural beauty. This pleasant lane makes for a fantastic bike trail.

My friend and husband of nearly thirty years! God has been so good to us...
Bike riding is exhilarating and relaxing all at the same time!

This is Long Island...

Abbey had an 8 am appt. this morning. Good thing she and Randy left an hour early to travel 10 miles...

The Grand Canyon is lookin' better than ever!

Two miles east on Montauk Highway...

It's always been my thought that sheep and their lambs are the most adorable of creatures. I was surprised when Randy took me for a drive yesterday to show me a farm he discovered not too far from our house! When we drove up, there were two huge llamas and a whole flock of sheep - some black, some white - grazing in an open meadow. This was something I never expected to see so close to our home!

Just a few of the sheep and lambs. Close-ups shots coming soon.

In no way do these photos depict the SIZE of these llamas. I'm telling you, they were huge! When I stepped out of the car to take a photo, the brown and white one came trotting up to the fence - and I went trotting back to the safety of our car. HUMONGOUS!

There were chickens and roosters too!

Celebration!

Today we celebrated Cheryl's birthday at the Cheesecake Factory. We had a wonderful time just being together and sharing life's stories, past and present. What a wonderful memory - enjoy the pics...

Our beautiful birthday lady and her girl, Melissa.
Cheryl's sweet sister, Deb. It's not to hard to tell they're sisters, that's for sure!
Here's Stephanie and her brother, Mark. Lorraine and Emily came too!

Emily - one of this year's high school graduates - was there to celebrate!
Me and Louanne - old friends from the Midwest!

It's Your Day!

Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday DEAR Cheryl! Happy Birthday to you!

Look at 'em now!

I started these violas on March 3rd. Ten weeks later, they are ready to put in the garden! I don't know why, but the zinnias and marigolds just never flourished. But that's okay! Lowe's has tons of 'em...

Ten weeks ago-

This morning...

From the '40s

Here are some photos of my Mom's childhood that I promised on my Mother's Day Blog.

Mom as a baby. She was born July 3rd, 1940. I have no idea how old she is in this photo, but she is quite chubby. Let's say she's about five or six-months-old here.
Mom as a toddler. Here father called her "Gigi" which suits her quite well, I think! 1942.
Drinking from a tin cup. Notice the old-fashioned glass milk container on the high chair in the background. I wish milk still came like that.

With "Aunt Wink" in Racine, Wisconsin. About 1945-46.

Mom with her parents, Charles and Charlotte Salak, on the front porch of their home in Racine, Wisconsin. 1945-46. Okay - here's how it goes starting in the back on the left: Uncle Robert (Bob) Widmer, sister Carol, cousin Bobby, Jr., (Mom is right below him), Aunt "Wink" (I have no idea what her given name was) and mother, Charlotte Salak. I am assuming that her father, Charles was the one taking the photo. Second row, sitting down: Grandma Widmer and Grandfather Widmer. Sitting in the very front is her Aunt Nancy who is Robert and Wink's daughter and Bobby's sister. Circa. 1948?

Robert (far left in back) and Charlotte (far right in back) are brother and sister. The older folks sitting down are their parents. This must have been some kind of family get-together with aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.
