Look what we got!

Our kindly neighbor left us a bag full of fresh tomatoes from his garden this morning! If you buy these in the supermarket, they are classified as "ugly tomatoes." Imperfect, but bursting with flavor! What a delicous treat for our family!

Abbey and I eat 'em sliced with salt and a little bit of pepper. It's what we had for lunch today!

Bored - nothin' to do...

"This will only take a minute, I'll be right back." Famous last words. Here are some pictures we took while waiting in the hot car for over twenty minutes.

Free Kittens!

Our neighbors found a family of kittens living on their property and inquired as to whether or not we wanted one. Luckily, I'm allergic to cats. :o) They are cute though, I must admit...

Scratch my belly!

Look what showed up this morning!

The morning glory seeds I planted were supposed to produce blue flowers only. This one tried to be blue but didn't quite make it. Pretty, isn't it?

Keeping warm in August

The nights have been chilly here on Long Island - unusual for August. Randy bought our family a fire pit and we got it out on Saturday evening to ward off the chilly evening air. Frank and his son, Anthony, stayed for dinner and we had dessert and conversation around a rip-roarin' fire. 'Twas fun!

Our new fire pit! Randy sprayed it with Rustoleum to protect it from rusting in Long Island's humidity.

Abbey and Melissa, enjoying a hot cup of coffee around a hot fire on a chilly August evening. How weird is that?

Pine tends to smoke quite a bit. Here's Frank through the fog.

Mr. Higgins tried to escape the yard on several occasions. Here he is wishing he never got caught.

Anthony mowed the lawn for us that day. I think he was pretty tired by the time evening rolled around. Thanks Anthony!

Morning Glories!

I have tried for years to grows Morning Glories and have never, ever been successful. This year, I went on-line and discovered that, because the husk is so hard, the seeds must be nicked and soaked. I nicked them with a nail clipper and soaked them for 24 hours. I planted them next to the utility pole in our front yard and waited patiently. Look what's finally blooming...

Same color as the sky!

The Eddy Family history...

Hi Jack and Doris! This post is for you...

Randy and I came across these memorials while touring Plymouth, Massachusetts. We wonder if John and Samuel Eddy are related to Jack? Wasn't his mother's maiden name "Eddy"? Randy remembers Jack saying that he had relatives who came to America on the Mayflower. Could this be them??!! If you would like a closer view of the memorials just click on the photo. Soooo interesting...

My Mom - 1958

My Mom was an excellent writer and communicated quite well through her writings. Not always willing to share her feelings verbally, she did a very good job expressing herself through pen and paper. Here's a newspaper article celebrating her first place position in an essay contest. Click on the photo to read the article.

Argh!

Look what happened!

Yesterday, right before church (of course) our power went out! A pine tree branch that was banging on the power lines (windy!), caused a very loud explosion, broke the branch in two, and caused a very small electrical fire.

Remnants...

Power was restored nearly two hours later.

The Flume!

Read all about it!

I wish, somehow, that these photos could do justice to the sheer, natural beauty of this place... but they absolutely cannot.
Randy and me in Franconia Notch, MA at the famous Flume.

If only pictures had sound, for only then could you realize the calming effect of rushing, gushing water spilling itself over a mountain of rock...

X marks the spot!

This is called a glacial boulder. Boy, was it ever heavy!

Boston

Just a few random shots from Boston...

President John Adams

Our second day of traveling took Quincy, Mass. where we toured the birthplace John Adams, and the home where he and his wife, Abigail, resided.

On the trolley... this was a very difficult shot! Randy zoomed in on the rear-view mirror from where the conductor could see all his passengers...

The library of President John Adams, located right next to his mansion. I was not allowed to take photographs of the inside.

The beautiful gate that opens to the walkway of the mansion.

The biggest Dahlia I have ever seen!

The home of John Quincy Adams, son of President John Adams.

Plymouth MA

Randy and I went on a much-needed trip with some good friends this past week. Our travels took us first to Plymouth, Massachusetts - a quaint, seaside town whose history is as old as America herself.

The essence of the town is completely captured in this photo...

A replica of the Mayflower.

Plymouth Rock - seems small, doesn't it? It used to be much bigger than it is today, but because chunks of it were removed for visiting dignitaries and because it was moved and dropped, it naturally got smaller and smaller as time went on...

On a night-guided tour, each tourist carried one of these lantern replicas though the town of Plymouth. Inside was a single candle that shed its light through punched tin. 'Twas a very special evening - one I will not soon forget...

Back at the hotel and quite tired indeed!

We're in BOSTON!

I am blogging from Randy's laptop here in our hotel room this stormy Wednesday morning. The weather is going to improve as the day wears on. I'll post pictures when we get back. See you on Friday.

Higgins has company

Mr. Higgins used to go crazy whenever the Guinea hens came near "his" window. Now that there's only one running around the neighborhood, he doesn't seem to mind sharing his space with such a poor, lonely bird. In fact, these two are getting along quite well nowadays! Just like old friends...
