On a whim...

We decided to eat a light breakfast on Saturday morning and to eat a nice lunch on the way up to Roseland Ranch. Bad idea. We traveled for miles and miles but didn't see a single restaurant, bodega, deli, McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, nada, nothin', the place was barren. Finally, 10 minutes away from our destination, we stopped at an unassuming deli on the roadside. Best decision of the week. When I tell you the food was FANTASTIC, believe me it was. Just ask Donald Trump. He dines there every summer when he and his family are in the area golfing or horseback riding.

Here's the chef and his son. This man wakes up at 3:30 every morning to make fresh bread for the day. They were just the nicest people. We didn't get a picture of the family's mom, but she was so sweet and lovely.

He gave us his last loaf of "best bread for French toast" and sent us on our way along with a great recipe.

See the cole slaw in the center? It was sooooo good. Shredded cabbage with tiny bits of parsley, cranberries, pineapple bits, and madarin oranges all in a very light sauce. No mayo, just a delicious sauce. I loved the way they shredded the cabbage; it was almost like spaghetti noodles - not chopped like most diners serve.

Here's how the deli looks from the outside... I told you it was unassuming. And yes, it's for sale. I don't think it'll be the same after the original owners move though.

I loved every minute of it. The Chili was some of the best I ever tasted. This place is a must visit. It is about 2 1/2 hours out side of NYC. Up the Hutch to 684 to 84 West then go to the Taconic to 44 east to 82 North. It is up a little ways on your left. great place, great fun and good food. Good peoples too.
