Am I the only one?

Are there any other bloggers out there willing to date themselves and admit to POURING over these catalogues as a child? I remember very well spending hours within the pages of the Sears Christmas Wish Books. My parents had seven children for whom to buy gifts and in 1970 there was only ONE THING that I wanted from the Sears Wish Book. If you'll leave a comment and let me know what you wished for when you were a child, I'll reveal what I wanted for Christmas in 1970 on Sunday morning, December 2nd.

1970 - This is the catalogue that contained my wish for Christmas when I was eight-years-old. Let me save you some time here - I'm forty-five.

When husbands help.

Randy surprised me this morning and made the bed while I was making the coffee. Our "friendship pillow" was turned upside down, but I didn't mind! In fact, I left it that way for the whole day - 'twas a sweet reminder of one simple act of thoughtfulness that set the tone for our whole day - after all, that's what friends are for!

J-O-Y!

Jesus and Others and You! What a wonderful way to spell joy! Jesus and others and you - in the life of each girl and each boy. "J" is for Jesus - He has first place; "O" is for others you meet face-to-face! "Y" is for you and in all that you do, put Jesus first and spell JOY!

Thank you Jonathan, Noel, and Joseph for showing us how to spell JOY!

Moonrise, November 24th

My Kodak camera simply could not capture the exquisite beauty of tonight's moonrise here on Long Island, New York. It was so lovely that I had to jump in the car and find a place where I could get a clear shot of its golden beams as they peered through the autumn clouds. And some say there is no God.

Here are some photos I took of a statue on Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, also known as the fashion district. I think the texture and detail are amazing. I've been to Manhattan so many times, yet this was the very first time I ever noticed this sculpture. The city is like that. One would have to live there for years to learn and remember all its details.

Care worn...
Hardworking hands...

Love the contrast in this shot...

Look who's having a birthday!

There's a very special young lady in our church who is celebrating her nineteenth birthday today! Check Abigail's blog to discover who she is! Leave a comment on Abbey's site and let the birthday girl know that you thought of her today!

I know, he's JUST A DOG...

But we got this for him anyway. The letter "E" makes him an Engesetter (only because the store ran out of "H" for Higgins.)

"Tried and True" is a good description of Mr. Higgins!

A book review... of sorts...

A stubbornly resistant cold/virus has held me housebound for nearly a week now. Because there's not much else I can do but rest, I've had time to surf through cyberspace, and to scroll through the blogs of other Christian women. It's been wonderful to see the threads of Christian virtue woven through the writings of so many good ladies and young women. Yet I am troubled... troubled by a book. A book that I've seen highly praised by those who have read it and by those who have only heard about it yet cannot wait for a quite moment to sink their minds into its pages.

Many have posted a picture of the book's front cover and as soon as I saw its title I determined in my heart not to buy it, not to read it, ever! Maybe the information stored within its chapters would be quite worthy of my time. It may be chock full of applicable principles. But its title speaks of a separation issue right off the bat. You want to know the title, right? Here it is, “Passionate Housewives Desperate for God." I think if all of us are honest, we’d have to admit that it brings to mind a less than virtuous television program—a sitcom that's worse than the worst, revealing and reveling in the ugliest traits a woman could possess. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” A perfect verse to describe the television program I’d rather not mention—it’s that bad.

Why would an author who says God is her Father find it necessary to look to the world to title the book she, no doubt, labored over for months and months? Does not the Scripture exhort God’s children, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Could it be the perfect will of God that the title of one’s book conjure up polluted images of the world in the mind of the reader? Could it be acceptable to the Lord that one blogger mixed up the title’s adjectives while writing her intentions to read this short volume? There’s something very wrong about this, I think

It's always a good thing to try and imagine what you would do should the Lord Jesus Christ stop in for an unannounced visit. It helps to assess what one has in her home (magazines, catalogues, DVDs, CDs, etc.) and whether or not it should remain there. And if He did come for a visit, each one of us would greet Him with much adoration and deep reverence, wouldn't we? But would we be ashamed at some of the items lying about the living room? Would we hurry to change the radio station? And what would we do if "Passionate Housewives Desperate for God" was displayed on the coffee table directly in front of the place where the Lord was seated? I can hear it now: “It’s not what you think, Lord, really. The title is different, it just sounds the same, but it’s not the same thing as that television program. It’s this book about Christian living, and it’s really good, but it’s not anything like that show. I know it looks that way—my unsaved neighbor thought the same thing—but it’s not, really. Here, I’ll just hide it for now.” Shame. Not because of its contents (like I said, it may be a very good book), but because its title is equated with the wicked world. The unsaved around us should be able to plainly see the difference Christ has made in our lives. May it never be said of the professing Christian woman that the world comfortably abides in her house.

But why should we pretend that Christ may pay us an announced visit? There’s really no need to merely imagine His divine presence. He is here, right now. Remember what the Lord said to His children, “And lo, I am with you always, even until the end of the world.” His all-seeing eye inventories the life of the Christian every single second. My life, your life. Have you anything you’d rather He not find? Is there something in your home, such as the above-mentioned book, that just doesn’t seem right? Get rid of it. There’s an abundance of good, unquestionable reading material out there for the Christian woman’s betterment. Here’s a verse to end this post: “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” I Thessalonians 5:22. As for “Passionate Housewives Desperate for God”? I’ll never buy it, I’ll never read it, ever. No apologies given.

Everyone should have an Abbey I think

She took good care of me today with hot servings of homemade chicken soup, endless cups of medicinal tea, and the constant plea to rest. She cleaned the house and took out her treasure boxes, sharing her favorite things from the past: a card from a brother, a poem from another, and a favorite picture of her father. Her kindness filled our home today and filled my heart with the sweet knowledge that it was, indeed, okay to rest. She lent me a favorite book and begged me please read. I finished it just now and am waiting the return of my daughter and her Dad from a revival meeting I've been forced to miss. The house is quite empty without them.

I've been hosting some unwelcome guests these past several days. My energy is zapped and I just want to sleep from everything they've put me through. I can't eat. I have a headache; and now I'm hoping and praying that their time here will soon be over. It's not that I don't like company; quite the opposite is true. It's just that some guests are more enjoyable than others. These pests don't even know when to leave. They keep demanding more of my time, more of my energy, more of ME! It's been nearly seventy-two hours since they first arrived - and they weren't even invited. How dare they! I wish I could just grab them by their collars and THROW them out. After all, I have things to do; I have work that I want to get done! But they're the type to leave exactly when they want to, and not one minute sooner. Annoying. I'm exhausted just writing about them and have to go to bed now.

For Katina...

Hi Katina! I thought I would give you something visual in response to your request. I made six pairs of the New Look pattern. The girls loved them! The pattern runs a little big. If you pick your size according to the pattern measurements and then make one size smaller, you should be okay. For a better fit on one of the girls, I had to add darts in the back waistband. Like most of the skirts made today, this pattern has a low rise which can easily be adjusted right on the pattern. With a large inverted pleat on each leg, these culottes are very full and were fantastic for horseback riding!

Here's a nice pattern. I cut out view E but I haven't made them yet. This pattern looks full and modest.

A Post for the Lord's Day

Recently, Randy penned a very good article in regard to the suffering that takes place all around the world, every day, all the time, by all people—young and old. Suffering is common, and I have been no exception to the facts that surround our fallen race. (I’m sure my readers can relate.) My life here on planet earth is scarred by suffering—some of it my own fault, some of it not. Some of it I have born alone. But when Jesus Christ became my Saviour, the pain of suffering was no longer private. It became a burden He shared and gladly takes upon His own shoulders on a regular basis. He encourages me to cast all my care upon him; for he cares for me—I Peter 5:7. He assures me that the things which may happen to me in this life have been allowed only for my good “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 The trials and temptations faced here below afford me the opportunity not only to mature in the faith, but to lay up treasure in heaven as I seek to glorify Him with my life through the trials He allows.

My Lord Jesus regularly encourages me through His Word and bids me rest assured that this is not the only life! There is hope. Hope for a bright future without pain and suffering, without sin. There’s a future where His children will be with Him—forever! Oh how I long for the precious promise of His return! But has our Lord left us hopeless while living here below? Must we only dream of His return and have no hope for the now? Matthew 28:20 has an encouraging answer, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” To know that Christ is with me now— walking with me, talking with me, and sharing my joys and heartaches—gives me hope! “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23. He knows! The One Who suffered beyond my understanding, understands my suffering. His mercy and compassion will never fail. They are fresh, waiting to be bestowed upon me each and every morning while I linger here below. And all is well—even in the midst of suffering.

Back in time...

Remember to add an extra hour to your schedule tomorrow morning at 2 a.m. Or, you could try moving back the hands on your clock before you say goodnight - it works just as well :o) Hope to see you tomorrow at 10 a.m.!

Long Island today...

The remnants of HURRICANE NOEL are expected to drop-in for a while today. She should arrive around 10 am and stay until evening. Days like this bring about comforting things, like cups of steaming HOT COCOA, bowls of CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP, and homemade COOKIES! Here's her portrait. Lovely, isn't she? :0)

Roses in November!

Can you imagine a place where roses grow without attention? Imagine Long Island! I have always loved roses, but was never, ever able to grow them in other places where I have lived. Long Islanders can grow roses without even trying. I planted a miniature rose bush next to our garage seven years ago. It was given to me on Mother's Day from one of my boys and I fully expected it to wither up and die. Seven years later it is producing lovely red buds - in NOVEMBER! And to think I've never even fertilized the thing! Here are some pics:

If you look closely at this photo, you can see a polka dotted feather from our neighborhood Guinea Hen and the blossoms of some very hearty marigolds!

The votes are in!

Thank you so much for voting on my poll in regard to blog music. You may be wondering what I think about blog music—do I like it? Do I think it’s not necessary? Do I find it annoying? Did I actually vote in my own poll? YES! I did! I actually voted in my own poll. After all, everyone is entitled to an opinion and mine has been shaped not only through experience, but also through research. Do you know that the average person spends approximately one or two minutes looking at the blog of another? If that person has to spend any time turning off music he doesn’t appreciate, that person will leave the blog altogether.

A blog should never be “work” for the viewer—that’s my opinion. Oftentimes, I have become frustrated with blog music, especially when it interferes with music already playing on my computer. “Oh Sola Mio” and “Amazing Grace” coming forth from the same sound system creates a cacophony, not an enjoyable listening experience! “Just turn off your speakers if you don’t want to hear it,” was one solution offered by a fellow blogger. But why should I have to? Should one’s blog music dictate the control panel of my computer sound system? Is it fair that I should take my time to adjust slide bars and dials just so I can look at another’s blog in silence or while listening to the music of my own choice?

Those who voted in favor of blog music (10 votes) were outvoted by those who are not (18 votes). The people have spoken—blog music is not really necessary and can, in fact, be an annoyance. :o) And now you know how I voted on my own poll.

Redemption draweth nigh...

Click through the following links as they relate to Luke 21 and be encouraged, Christian! Each day that passes is one day closer to the coming of our Lord...

"
And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh."

"And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?"

"And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold."

"So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand."
